HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS KICKS-OFF AT THE HAITIAN HERITAGE MUSEUM IN MIAMI’S ART DISTRICT

MIAMI, FL, April 27, 2014 The month of May is Haitian Heritage Month and to celebrate the Haitian Heritage Museum will take part in a series of events and programming. First, the Haitian Heritage Museum will celebrate by having a cadre of events throughout the community where Haitians and non-Haitians alike can come get a taste of Haitian culture without leaving or needing a passport.

Haitian Heritage Month is a nationally recognized month and an opportunity for individuals including Haitians and lovers of the the Haitian culture to celebrate the rich culture, distinctive art, delicious food and learn the traditions of Haiti and its people. The celebration is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day on May 18th, a major patriotic day celebration in Haiti and the Diaspora created to encourage patriotism.

The Haitian Heritage Museum’s Month of May series of events include:

Friday May 9, 2014 from 6:30pm – 10pm (Kick-off event)

Toussaint Louverture A Man, A Destiny, A Story: collaboration between the Haitian Heritage Museum and the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon (MUPANAH) in Haiti, with support of Pierre E. Domond. The exhibition show the path set for us by Toussaint this extraordinary visionary who escaped from the chains of slavery and has successfully put together the moral qualities we all know with intelligence and boundless courage, to be able to lead our steps as a first Black, Independent and free nation.

April 19-May 17 – Haitian Heritage Museum Mr. or Ms. May 18
One person will be crowned Mr. or Ms. May 18 by participating in the online contest. Individuals crowned will win over $300.00 in prizes and will represent the museum throughout the year as select events. Details posted at Facebook.com/haitianheritagemuseum. Contest ends on May 17, 2014 at Midnight.

Wednesday May 14, 2014 6:30pm-10pm Toussaint L’ouverture Lecture

The Haitian Heritage Museum will conduct a lecture about Toussaint L’ouverture about the impact of this International hero, on Haiti, France and the Americas.

Celebrating the Haitian Heritage and History focusing on the Life of Toussaint Louverture

Thursday May 29, 2012 9:00am –Ayiti Expose Haitian Heritage Museum Outreach Program

Students from Liberty City Elem. will come experience the workshop “What is Culture?” being lead by the Haitian Heritage Museum, museum educators. The children will experience music, presentation and information regarding culture.
